Description
Since Spring 2006, Doreen Piano and Celeste Del Russo have collected student writing and instructor materials generated in writing classrooms at the University of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The collected materials known as the Writing After Katrina Archive Project (WAKAP)reflect not only students' experiences of the unfolding tragedy but also their engagement with social and political issues that arose after the flood. Examples of student writing include personal narratives the evacuation experience, post-Katrina life, essays about places in New Orleans, about whether or not New Orleans should be saved; Katrina-related interview papers, Katrina anniversary observations, poems and nonfiction essays. The work was mainly produced in first year composition classes but some upper division English classes are represented: poetry, sophomore writing, and sophomore literature. Also a class taught at UM-St. Louis during Fall 2005 is included. Materials in the collection date from Fall 2005-Spring 2010.
